Exit Interview Checklist
Preparation
Schedule the exit interview in advance to ensure the employee has enough notice
Prepare the interview questions and format (in-person, questionnaire, etc.)
Review the employee's history with the company including performance reviews, commendations, and disciplinary actions
Conducting the Interview
Begin with explaining the purpose and confidentiality of the exit interview
Ask the employee for their reasons for leaving and any suggestions for improvement
Discuss the employee's experience with the company, including culture, workload, and team dynamics
Post-Interview Process
Document the responses and any important points from the exit interview
Share relevant feedback with appropriate departments while maintaining confidentiality
Analyze the data to identify trends or issues that need to be addressed by management
Final Employment Matters
Ensure all company property is returned, including ID badges, keys, and equipment
Finalize any outstanding payroll issues, such as unpaid wages or vacation time
Discuss the continuation of benefits, if applicable, and provide information on COBRA or retirement accounts
Communication and Transition
Inform the team and relevant departments of the employee's departure
Plan for the transition of the employee's responsibilities to other team members
Update company records and systems to reflect the employee's change in employment status
