Driver's Hours of Service Compliance Checklist
Driver Qualification and Records
Ensure all drivers have a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) for the vehicle type they are operating
Verify that drivers have completed the required medical examination and have a valid medical examiner's certificate
Maintain detailed driver qualification files including application for employment, motor vehicle records, and road test certificates
Hours of Service Documentation
Confirm that all drivers have the appropriate logbook, electronic logging device (ELD), or timesheet
Review driver logs for accuracy, completeness, and any Hours of Service (HOS) violations
Ensure that drivers are maintaining proper records for duty status changes, including off-duty, sleeper berth, driving, and on-duty not driving
Driver Training and Awareness
Provide regular training on Hours of Service regulations and the proper use of logging methods
Update drivers on any changes to HOS regulations and company policies
Conduct periodic reviews and refresher courses to ensure continued compliance and understanding of Hours of Service rules
Vehicle and Equipment Checks
Perform routine safety inspections and maintenance checks on all vehicles to ensure they are safe for operation
Ensure that ELDs or other logging devices are installed properly and functioning correctly
Regularly audit vehicle inspection reports and repair records for compliance with maintenance standards
Compliance Monitoring and Auditing
Monitor driver logs and records for compliance with HOS regulations using an auditing system
Implement a process for addressing and correcting Hours of Service violations or discrepancies
Prepare for and cooperate with regulatory compliance reviews or audits by government agencies
Rest and Break Compliance
Ensure drivers are adhering to mandatory rest break periods and cumulative driving limits
Review logbooks and ELD reports to verify that rest break requirements are being met
Provide drivers with information on rest stop locations and amenities to support compliance with mandatory rest breaks
