Loading Dock Safety Checklist
General Safety Procedures
Ensure that the loading dock area is free of debris and spills to prevent slips, trips, and falls.
Verify that all dock plates, boards, and levelers are in good working condition and secure before use.
Check that dock bumpers are intact to prevent damage to trucks and the dock.
Vehicle Safety
Ensure that wheel chocks or restraints are used to prevent vehicles from moving during loading and unloading.
Confirm that the vehicle's engine is turned off and the keys are removed before loading or unloading begins.
Inspect that the vehicle is properly aligned with the dock door to avoid unsafe gaps or lippage.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Check that all workers are equipped with the proper PPE such as safety vests, steel-toed boots, and gloves.
Verify that any required hard hats and eye protection are being used when necessary.
Ensure that hearing protection is available and used in areas with high noise levels.
Material Handling Equipment
Inspect forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment before use to ensure they are in safe operating condition.
Ensure that load limits are strictly adhered to, to prevent equipment and dock overload.
Confirm that operators are trained and certified to operate the material handling equipment.
Dock Area Maintenance
Regularly inspect dock levelers and overhead doors for proper operation and maintenance needs.
Keep the dock area well-lit, replacing any burnt out lights immediately.
Maintain clear and well-marked pedestrian walkways separate from vehicle traffic.
