Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Checklist
Eligibility Requirements
Verify age requirements for the state in which you are applying
Provide proof of full legal name and date of birth
Provide proof of legal presence and social security number
Provide proof of residency in the state where the CDL is issued
Education and Training
Enroll in a certified CDL training program
Complete the required hours of classroom instruction
Accumulate the necessary hours of behind-the-wheel experience
CDL Application and Testing
Submit a completed CDL application form
Schedule and pass the General Knowledge test
Schedule and pass the CDL Skills Test, including the vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and road test
Medical and Background Checks
Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination
Provide a medical examiner's certificate
Consent to a drug and alcohol testing, if required by employer
Endorsements and Restrictions
Determine if you need additional endorsements for your intended driving type
Study for and pass any endorsement tests, such as Hazmat, Passenger, or Tanker
Understand any restrictions that might be applied to your CDL and how to remove them
Maintaining CDL Certification
Stay informed about the latest traffic laws and regulations
Renew your CDL and medical examiner's certificate before they expire
Complete any required continued education or training
