Oversized Load Preparation Checklist
Permit Acquisition
Determine the exact dimensions and weight of the load to ensure accurate permit application
Check state and local regulations for oversized loads for each jurisdiction the load will travel through
Apply for and obtain the necessary transportation permits well in advance of the scheduled move date
Route Planning
Identify a route that can accommodate the size and weight of the load while minimizing disruption to traffic and infrastructure
Conduct a physical survey of the route to identify potential obstacles such as low bridges, narrow roads, or tight turns
Coordinate with local authorities and utility companies to manage traffic and address any required temporary modifications along the route
Safety Measures
Ensure that all required safety signage, flags, and lighting are in place and meet regulatory standards
Arrange for escort vehicles to accompany the oversized load, if required by law or deemed necessary for safety
Conduct a comprehensive safety briefing for all personnel involved in the transport, including drivers, escort vehicle operators, and support staff
Equipment and Load Securement
Inspect the trailer and securing equipment to ensure they are in good condition and appropriate for the size and type of load
Secure the load according to industry standards to prevent shifting during transport
Verify that the overall height, width, and length of the loaded vehicle comply with permit requirements
Communication and Monitoring
Establish a clear communication plan between the driver, escort vehicles, and the central dispatch
Implement real-time GPS tracking to monitor the progress of the shipment and make adjustments to the route if needed
Prepare for contingencies by identifying alternative routes, rest areas, and secure holding locations
