Opening Procedures

Shift Huddle and Promotions

Customer Service on the Floor

    Listen, acknowledge, and offer a remedy within posted policy (refund, exchange, store credit). Anything above $50 or outside the 30-day window goes to the manager on duty before the offer is made.

Sales Floor Maintenance

    Walk each four-way and two-way; reface so the size break is left-to-right and brand labels point out. Pull empty hangers to the stockroom — empty hangers on the floor are a common shrink indicator.

    Set the wet-floor sign before retrieving supplies — leaving the spill unattended creates an OSHA slip-and-trip exposure. Note the time and location in the daily log.

Point of Sale Operations

    Insert or tap — never key in PAN manually unless the chip reader fails twice. Manual key entry pulls the store into a higher PCI scope and is audited monthly.

    Enter DOB at the register prompt for every alcohol, tobacco, or lottery sale — no exceptions for known regulars. A single missed card during a state compliance check can trigger a $1,000+ fine and put the license at risk.

Inventory and Receiving

    Count cartons and pieces against the PO line by line. Note shortages on the BOL before signing — once signed clean, the vendor will refuse short-ship adjustments at 60 days.

    Don't just adjust the on-hand. A variance over $X or 5% should be reviewed with the manager — it is often a receiving error, mis-scan, or shrink signal worth investigating before it gets buried.

Loss Prevention Awareness

    A simple greeting in fitting-room corridors and back-aisle blind spots is the most effective deterrent. Do not pursue suspected shoplifters past the door — observe, document, and call police per policy.
